QuickTime is normally best for downloading and CD movies, and high bandwidth connections.

QuickTime movies are normally encoded at very high bitrates. Rates that are too high for dial up modems, and even some 'broadband' connections. That is why it is best suited for short length (60 seconds or less) videos. QuickTime is still among the best for high quality compression of video and audio.
These are examples of QuickTime movies that are "progressive streaming".
The first one is a smaller file and will load faster for those that are on a dial up modem.
The second video looks better and is bigger.
The second video is only recommended if you are on a DSL or Cable modem,or have a lot of time and patience.

Do QuickTime videos look better than other formats?

QuickTime is encoded at a much higher bitrate than Real or Windows Media.

That is why it is normally used for "Progressive" or "HTTP" type streaming, but is not actually "Streaming" in the truest sense of the word.
